Travelling Around

Olomouc is situated in the heart of Moravia, roughly halfway between Brno and Ostrava and only a couple of hours from Prague by train. This location means Olomouc becomes an amazing base from which you can travel to a number of places not only within the Czech Republic, but also neighbouring countries. In fact, it’s one of the most valued parts of the experience according to our Chinese alumni:

What’s more, you have several ways of getting to Olomouc from China, most commonly through Prague or Vienna, which means you can always find a convenient and/or cheap connection.

Within Olomouc

Olomouc has a great public transport network of buses and trams with a student ticket costing 20 Kč. These tickets can be bought at shops marked with a public transport sticker, as well as from vending machines at tram or bus stops or directly from the driver of the vehicle (albeit with a small surcharge). 

OR you can download the DPMO app on your mobile phone and buy tickets directly in the app. This is arguably the most convenient way to purchase tickets and get around.

Olomouc also has a variety of shared transport options including bikes and scooters which can be unlocked through their apps. With an extensive and growing network of cycle ways, it’s becoming increasingly convenient to cycle and scooter around the city.

Outside Olomouc

The most convenient way to travel outside of Olomouc is by train, although buses are also an option. You can get most places within Central Europe by train within a few hours, while Western, Southern and Northern European destinations can be reached in a couple of hours by plane from Prague.

  • Austria – Vienna: 2 hrs 30 mins
  • Slovakia – Bratislava: 2 hrs 50 mins
  • Hungary – Budapest: 5 hrs 20 mins
  • Poland – Warsaw: 5 hrs 40 mins
  • Germany – Berlin: 6 hrs 40 mins
